But why stop the strawmanning there SBF? We can easily disprove all the scientific disciplines simply by misrepresenting what they do:

Sociologists are engaged in pseudoscience because what they do is scan a city for the building that contains culture.

Biologists are engaged in pseudoscience because what they do is scan the forest for the tree that contains all the ecology.

Geneticists are engaged in pseudoscience because what they do is scan the genome for the gene that contains evolution.

Scientists aren't "looking for the location" of love in the brain. Rather, they're noting that love exists as certain brain states. And that during those states certain regions of the brain become more active than others. Nobody's saying those active regions ARE love.

sitting in the hall i was shocked when i read this article.

kingdom ministry 2005 nov {after the tsunami and new orleans desaster witnesses sent millions to help brothers in these areas marking their envelopes "for the tsunami victims" etc.

the society realized since there are few witnesses in tsunami ravaged countries this money would be wasted helping muslims.

Like what, paying off pedophile cases? Building Bethel 2.0? Hiring an outside marketing firm to rebrand the WT?

I hope no one sent them relief money thinking it would actually be used for humanitarian aid.

It's a shame you didn't bother to read the peer reviewed scientific paper I cited in my very next post as many of the objections you raised are addressed. The New Humanist article, which you quoted from, can be forgiven as it's seven years old and was written before the science was in.

If after reading it you still think it's "nonsensical reductionism" then by all means feel free to reach out to the Professor who co-authored the paper, Dr. Zhang, to give him a piece of your mind and tell him exactly why you know so much more about the topic than he does.

I am convinced that the physical universe is only part of reality.

So we know that scientist understand "physical" reality. Do we know that there's another group of people who understand the "other factors that make up reality?"

If so, how does this other group know there are other factors?

What methodology do the use to determine those other factors?

What are those other factors?

Who is this group that knows about these other factors?

Is there consensus in the group about those other factors?

Agreed Millie210, but I certainly wouldn't put it past the WT to manipulate and distort the truth. Perhaps their was a tour group in the building that they provided water to so that means they were "sheltering people".

They regularly redefine terms so they can make themselves look better.

she completely goes into cult mode.. me: why is the memorial on march 23rd this year and not april 22nd/23rd when the corresponding nissan 14 commences?

Mom, do you think it is important to "examine everything carefully" like it says at 1 Thessalonians 5:21?

What do you think it meant by Proverbs 14:18 when it says, "The naive will inherit foolishness but the shrewd are crowned with knowledge."? To be crowned in knowledge don't we have to make sure we have accurate information? Isn't that the most shrewd thing we can do?

Every culture is proud. And many cultures are ancient. But being proud and being ancient says nothing about the value of your culture.

I remember a letter being read in the KH a couple of months after 9/11 that said witnesses who were walking out of Manhattan after the towers collapsed across the Brooklyn Bridge were able to take up shelter in Bethel and it was "brotherly love" blah blah blah.

But this thread seems to directly contradict that. Even a letter from a supposed Bethelite seems to indicate they were not letting anyone into the building.

basically what the thread title says.. do you guys think the gb want the jw religion to fail?

of course failing in the ultimate sense is just not going to happen.

no matter how bankrupt they went, there is always going to be a percentage that holds on.. but downsizing the membership?

While the GB are breathtakingly arrogant I none the less believe it's a sincere form of arrogance. And I think it's a mistake to say they're just in it for the money or don't actually believe Jesus is going to come flying out of the sky riding a white horse any day now.
